Kalaupapa Park is a reminder of the devastating affect of introduced diseases on the people of Hawaii. This island is the site of two major tragedies in American history. The first was the forced removal of indigenous people between 1864 and 1895. The second was the forced isolation of sick people from 1866 until 1969.

Description: Pu'ukahola Heiau National Historic Site provides walking tours, ranger talks, and even cell phone and GPS tours. The park offers views of the great temple of Kamehameha the Great, the most renowned king of Hawaii. There are amazing shark watching experiences nearly daily, where sometimes you can see up to 200 sharks.

Description: Though the park has open access year round, the Vistor Center is located on Crater Rim Drive and is open daily from 745am to 5pm. This amazing national park gives visitors a look into 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution, as well as the human culture of the area. The park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes.

Description: The park is open year round, only closing due to weather emergencies. There are three visitor centers located at various elevations between sea level and summit, where the park headquarters is located. This national park has more endangered species than any other park in the United States, as well as offering an amazing look in to the history of the ancient and modern Hawaiian culture.

Description: There two wilderness campsites offer access only by trail, on foot. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no amenities on site, so be prepared to bring everything you will need. Camping is limited to no more than 3 nights in a 30 day period.

Camping in any of the Honolulu City and County parks is managed by the department of parks and recreation. Camping is allowed Friday through Wednesday, though the various parks are open different days and seasons. The campsites are closed during the day Wednesday and Thursday for maintenance. Applicants must apply for a camping permit in person at the parks office, and no early than 2 weeks prior to the camping period.
